1863Gettysburg:
1Four score and seven years ago
2 our fathers brought forth
3 on this continent,
4 a new nation,
5 conceived in Liberty,
6 and dedicated to the proposition
7 that all men are created equal.
8Now we are engaged
9 in a great civil war,
10 testing whether that nation,
11 or any nation so conceived
12 and so dedicated,
13 can long endure.
14We are met
15 on a great battle-field of that war.
16We have come to dedicate
17 a portion of that field,
18 as a final resting place
19 for those who here gave their lives
20 that that nation might live.
21It is altogether fitting and proper
22 that we should do this.
23But, in a larger sense,
24 we can not dedicate—
25 we can not consecrate—
26 we can not hallow—
27 this ground.
28The brave men,
29 living and dead,
30 who struggled here,
31have consecrated it,
32 far above our poor power
33 to add or detract.
34The world will little note,
35 nor long remember
36 what we say here,
37 but it can never forget
38 what they did here.
39It is for us the living,
40 rather,
41 to be dedicated here
42 to the unfinished work
43 which they who fought here
44 have thus far so nobly advanced.
45It is rather for us
46 to be here dedicated
47 to the great task remaining before us—
48 that from these honored dead
49 we take increased devotion
50 to that cause
51 for which they gave
52 the last full measure of devotion—
53 that we here highly resolve
54 that these dead
55 shall not have died in vain—
56 that this nation,
57 under God,
58 shall have a new birth of freedom—
59 and that government
60 of the people,
61 by the people,
62 for the people,
63 shall not perish from the earth.
